Hippo Home Insurance Review

Whether you’re buying your own home for the first time or not, purchasing homeowners insurance is important. As you search for the perfect place to call your own, it’s wise to consider all the important factors in choosing the best home insurance company. One of the factors that you should consider is convenience, especially in today’s world when most services can be accessed online. Hippo, a startup insurance company, can be your choice if you want a modern approach to coverages and an impressive array of digital tools that can provide convenience for your insurance needs. To know more about them and to help you decide if this insurance company is right for your needs, we’ve made a review of Hippo Insurance. Let’s start!

A Brief History

Hippo was launched in 2015 by two entrepreneurs, Assaf Wand and Eyal Navol. They built this company in Mountain View, California to provide smart home insurance for modern households. While many companies offer online quotes, not many allow you to complete the purchase of the policy online. Hippo hopes to change this and make it more convenient for each customer to purchase their home insurance policies online by offering transparent coverages. They spent a lot of time to come up with new strategies in order to create ways on how the process of purchasing policies can become faster, how they can help their customers to avoid loss by using smart home sensors, and how to eliminate unnecessary or hidden costs.

They are one of the most fast-growing and popular home insurance companies in the country today, offering homeowners insurance in 17 states:

AlabamaArizonaCaliforniaColoradoIllinoisIndianaMarylandMinnesotaMissouriMississippiNew MexicoNevadaOhioPennsylvaniaTennesseeTexas, and Wisconsin.

The Truth

Hippo doesn’t underwrite their own policies, these policies are underwritten by pioneer insurance giants TOPA and Swiss RE, this is why you can be sure that your home insurance policy is secure and has sufficient financial backing to pay the claims. They offer low rates with great coverage which would be a great advantage for a homeowner; however, they don’t offer in-person customer support. You can only contact the customer service over the phone or through their website. Yes, this may be very convenient, but if a big problem is needed to be discussed with an agent about your home, talking over the phone or through email can sometimes cause misunderstandings. However, if you are okay to give up in-person customer service, you’ll still get great coverage at an affordable price.

The Claim

They claim to provide top-notch customer service by guiding their clients every step of the way. They also claim to protect the modern homeowner lifestyle and offer simplicity in everything.

Is Hippo’s Claim True?

Yes, it is true for the most part. If you’re looking for a company that provides a lot of coverage at a low price, this can be one of your best options. However, when it comes to online customer service, yes, it can bring convenience to a lot of customers but not all the time, even if it’s available 24/7. There are some instances where in-person support is better than talking to an insurance agent over the phone. Making sure that you understand all the terms and conditions of filing an insurance claim is important, that's why picking an insurance company with excellent customer service should be considered. You can opt to go with a different homeowners insurance company instead, if talking over the phone and interacting online about your policy is not convenient for you.

Other than that, Hippo isn’t an insurer. They’re more like an online insurance agency to TOPA and Swiss Re. They process claims and provide insurance products; however, the policies are not underwritten by them.

Your home is already insured for an additional 25% rebuild cost since Hippo’s standard home insurance policies offer replacement cost coverage for your home. Other than that, here are some additional coverages that you can put in your policy for extended protection.

  • Home office – Covers home office equipment such as your printer and personal computer.
  • Equipment breakdown – Protects mechanical or large electronic appliances such as water heaters, television, kitchen appliances, and others.
  • Service line – If any of your property was damaged by backed-up sewer or faulty electric wiring, whether it was caused by wear and tear or accident, this coverage will pay for the cost of repairs, replacements, or excavations.
  • Water backup – Covers the things you have in your home damaged by water backed-up in your sewage.

You will get a discount on your premiums if:

  • Sprinkler system will be installed in your home.
  • You have a hail-resistant roof.
  • Your windows have storm shutters.
  • Notion Smart Home Kit, a smart home sensor that detects temperature changes and water leaks, is installed in your home.
  • You have a burglar or other security systems in your home.

Since Hippo Insurance is still new to the industry, they don’t get much customer reviews, unlike the big names in the industry such as GEICOFarmers, and State Farm. In Clearsurance, only 6 customers have submitted their review about Hippo, and all of them are positive. Customers say that the policies they offer are affordable and comprehensive and that their customer service is great.

Hippo's official site, on the other hand, boasts positive reviews from 1,460 of their verified customers, with an overall consensus of a whooping 4.9 out of 5. As an insurance company, positive reviews are very important as this usually reflects how they are paying out their claims and their customer support conduct. Most of the time, homeowners who are unhappy about their payouts are the ones leaving bad reviews so Hippo clients taking the time to leave great reviews is very insightful on the company's performance.

Their financial strength will be based on its policyholders. A.M. Best gave both TOPA and Swiss Re an A- or Excellent rating for their ability to payout claims. This shows that they can pay all the claims filed by their customers just like State Farm and Geico.

Hippo doesn’t have a customer satisfaction rating in J.D. Power Rankings, TOPA and Swiss Re are not included in the rankings as well. But, it doesn’t mean that customers aren’t satisfied with Hippo’s service since Hippo is still new to the industry.
